Distilled in 2014 and made from the 2013 barley harvest, this unique whisky reflects Islay’s unique terroir. The farms – including Craigens, Island, Coull, and Rockside – proudly grow Islay Concerto and Propino barley under challenging conditions, including unpredictable weather and natural hazards such as wild geese and deer.
The whisky is heavily peated to 40 PPM, with an ABV of 50%, and matured for seven years in a combination of casks: 84% in first fill bourbon barrels, 8% in second fill virgin oak casks, and 8% in second fill Bordeaux wine casks. This carefully balanced maturation gives the Port Charlotte Islay Barley its signature flavour: a mix of smoke, fruit and woody notes.
Tasting notes:
- On the nose: Aromas of malty digestive biscuits and peat smoke open the palate, with sweet notes of vanilla, honey, toffee and Crème Brûlée. As the whisky breathes, fruity hints of lemon peel, grapefruit, ripe melon, peach and red apple come to the fore, with maritime notes and a hint of spice such as nutmeg and cinnamon.
- On the palate: An initial citrusy tingle gives way to ripe fruit, soft peat smoke and a subtle maritime character. The flavours evolve into toasted oak, apricot, peach and melon, complemented by hints of coconut, marzipan and tobacco.
- Finish: Soft notes of stone fruit and toasted oak finish with a dry, smoky barbecue touch that lingers.
