This is a single malt whiskey from the Miyagikyo distillery, Nikka's second distillery that was built in 1969. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose this mountainous location in Sendai as a counterpart to his first distillery, Yoichi, located on the coast. Miyagikyo single malt uses less peat in the malt and is distilled in a pot still that is indirectly heated with steam. This gives this whiskey an elegant fruitiness and a characteristic aroma, with a strong influence of the Sherry cask during maturation.
Characteristics:
- On the nose: Opens with concentrated iris notes that emphasize the heaviness of the whisky. Then aromas of malted barley, exotic fruits such as banana, licorice and camphor develop. Over time, notes of burnt wood and ash add to the aromatic palette. Long afterwards, notes of white flowers and beeswax appear.
- On the palate: Malted barley forms the heart of the palate, surrounded by spicy, licorice, and spiced notes of ginger, cinnamon and chocolate. The mid-palate is very elegant and lively, with notes of fresh tobacco leaves and coconut coming together to create a natural symphony of aromas in the finish.
- Finish: An aroma of dried rose petals. Delicate tannins provide balance against the spicy flavors of lemon and grapefruit. The finish is long and complex, with notes of tobacco, spices such as cardamom and ginger, roasted nuts and stewed fruit such as apple and plum. When exhaling, exotic notes can also be discovered, such as lychee.
