Nikka's Yoichi distillery is located on the coast of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose Yoichi in Hokkaido because of its similar environmental conditions to Scotland, where he had learned whiskey making. Malt whiskeys are distilled here in a traditional way, for example using coal. These whiskeys reflect the authentic character of this exceptional location, with its refined coastal and peat notes.

The Yoichi single malt has pleasant peat notes and smokiness that come from traditional coal distillation, and also has a salty hint from the sea breeze that is present during the maturing process.

Characteristics:
- On the nose: A soft peat first subtly covers the aroma palette, but becomes more powerful over time, with smoke, soot and salty notes drowning out the first scent. The aromas further develop into candied citrus fruits such as lemon and orange, black licorice and spices such as nutmeg and ginger. Then aromas of roots and dried twigs open up, making the whiskey increasingly complex. Finally, floral aromas of carnation and iris emerge.
- In the mouth: The attack is well balanced and offers equal space to aromas of peat, smoke, herbs, fresh fruit such as melon and kiwi, and nuts such as almond and walnut. The middle palette starts with chocolate notes, but soon the peat takes over again. - Finish: Very ripe and abundant notes of ripe fruit, such as pear, Mirabelle plum and apple. The peat develops into a spicy and malty character, while the salty flavors contribute to the depth and coastal freshness of the finish. Finally, aromas of menthol, herbs such as coriander and dill, and earthy notes such as leather and chestnuts emerge.
